The National Capital Commission says:
The Rideau Canal Skateway is currently closed. The NCC is preparing for the 49th skating season on the Rideau Canal Skateway. We urge everyone to keep personal safety in mind and to remain off the Skateway as the ice is dangerously thin. The Skateway typically opens in early January. The ice thickness must measure at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) to accommodate the weight of the public. The NCC will officially launch the skating season once the ice conditions are safe and weather permits.Last updated : December 14, 2018 at 9:39 am.
